I can no longer kill a sea urchin
It is lying in my hand
Upside down
Looking into my eyes
Carefully yawning
First some, then some more
Showing me
Its white teeth, like soft claws
Like a lump of what is
An eyeball
A mouth
A diaphragm
A beating heart
We are getting to know each other
Recognize each other
Know each other
Always have
It looks at me
Letting me see it
Letting me see that it sees me
Pulsating, opening, closing
In a rhythm we both know
Meeting where we all are home
I feel the pulse of nature in my hand
The warmth from common source
From the inside of my body and the inside of its shape
Gently I place it down
And with no sound
The sea urchin finds its way
Back to the ocean
